Agraphobia

  • Sep. 4th, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Intense anxiety about being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult or embarrassing.  These situations are avoided or else are endured with marked distress combined with anxiety about having a panic attack or panic-like symptoms.

Agoraphobic fears typically involve characteristic clusters of situations that include being outside the home alone; being in a crowd or standing in a line; being on a bridge; and traveling in a bus, train, or automobile.

So my mum has suffered from Agraphobia for about 20 years and a few months. One day when she was strolling me through town in my buggy she ended up having a panic attack in the middle of the town and fell to the floor, people stepped over her and scorned her about how she was drunk etc. Lucky my nan was in town and found her and took her back home. Ever since then my mum has been to scared to go out anywhere where there are people around. It's been ages but she has now started to venture into the town. With my Dad in town she has gone shopping every day this week in my town, she went shopping in waitrose, she went into a shoe shop and bought some shoes, she went into whsmith to buy some mags, she went into boots to bye hair dye and she went to the post office. I'm so proud of her ^.^

Aw Jennie that is absolutely wonderful news, I am so happy for her =). I cant even begin to imagine what it must be like to be scared of leaving the house, I can't think of anything else so to hear she has been managing to do these things is amazing. =)
